DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
With this film, I pick up where my previous work left off by continuing to explore the questions of failed empathy, societal sadism, and unconscious psychopathies in everyday life. "Beth's three o'clock with Dr. Harlow" looks at these themes through the lens of a psychoanalytic session and dream state. It delves into feminine and maternal phenomena of psychopathy, or its basis in the anima, where my other work previously explored the masculine side, the animus. In this film, I allude to and rework ideas from psychologist Harry Harlow's 1950's monkey experiments on mother-infant bonding, the clinical interview with psychopathic child patient Beth in documentary "Child of Rage" from 1990, Philip K. Dick's masterwork about human empathy "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," and Ingmar Bergman's explorations of sadistic deity in "Through a Glass Darkly." I'm most interested in giving viewers the opportunity to experience something within themselves that has heretofore remained concealed or frankly unknown.
