Mega Mindfulness Meditation with Mantra & Mudra
MMMMMMMMMMMnnnnnnnnnnnnnggg
At our Belly Centre [approximately three finger widths below and behind the navel] is the physical centre of our body, also known as the lower dan tien or hara. It is the centre of infinite energy where we visualise the eternal flame and, as we focus on that image, we re-vitalize ourselves and the fire becomes brighter and brighter, purifying all shadows and darkness in our body and mind. Know that we can change the world with the gift of a smile. Form your positive intention and hold an inner smile at your Belly Centre. Please experiment, try this out for yourself and witness the world smiling back at you!
To put ourselves in contact with the earth element we focus on the breath and become truly present right here, right now on Planet Earth. Breath is life itself. When we are babies we breathe down deep into our lungs but as we get older many people lose this most natural breath.
So now we are going to practice mindfulness with abdominal breathing, toning the digestive system, improving organ function in the abdomen and increasing circulation to the lower limbs.
To facilitate this we use the earth mudra, or gesture, made with our hands by touching each thumb and first finger together in a circle, whilst the other three fingers remain outstretched.
The fingers on our hands have symbolic significance in the earth gesture because they represent that there are only three qualities and nothing more in the universe. In Samkhya philosophy, there are three major qualities (Gunas) that serve as the
fundamental operating principles or tendencies of Nature (Prakriti).
These are:
1. Inertia, darkness, laziness and ignorance [Tamas - the little finger]
2. Action, passion and movement [Rajas - the ring finger]
3. Clarity, understanding, luminosity & purity [Sattva - the middle finger]
These states must be transcended to pass from darkness to light and from ignorance to knowledge. The thumb‘s symbolic significance is to represent supreme consciousness whilst the index finger represents individual consciousness. Thumbs and index fingers touching show that although supreme and individual consciousnesses seem separate they are in fact at one. This is the meaning of Yoga as Union.
With our hands in this gesture the spontaneous breath is drawn down into our lower lungs and abdomen.
Sitting like a Buddha with the spine held erect but not rigid, rest your hands on your knees or, if seated on the edge of a chair, place your hands on your thighs.
Sit like a mountain. Eyes may be open or closed. Let your tongue rest at the roof of your mouth or behind your top front teeth. Now bring your awareness to the Belly Centre and focus on the breath as you chant mmmmmmmmmng.
To retain focus you can count from 108 down to 0. Now I breathe in 108, now I breathe out 108, now I breathe in 107, now I breathe out 107 etc. If you lose count simply go back to 108.
