What is the purpose of this exercise?

To increase the endurance/strength of the rotator cuff & scapular (shoulder blade) muscles as well as improve scapular control. The addition of the ball drops increases the open chain stability demand of the shoulder.

Why would you utilize it?
From a performance standpoint: Improving endurance and scapular control can be beneficial for athletes whose sport demands continuous movement and use of the shoulders (like swimmers, cheerleaders, etc.)

From a pain standpoint: This is often beneficial for patients who have pain associated with continuous arm movement (like gardening or working at chest height or greater) especially if their pain is improved by maintaining the scapula in an “optimal” position (preventing scapular depression, anterior tilting, etc.) This movement is also often beneficial for individuals with noted shoulder instability if focus is placed on preventing excessive glenohumeral motion during the task
