Many know of my happy addiction to genealogy. I love sleuthing and finding new family members - and have found several - relatively many, back into the 1500s, 1400s - and a few in the 1300s - and a Barber in the late 1200s (a le Barbur who was also known as le Tanneur). So maybe my surname might have been …

I can list many of these folk - now long gone, by their generations. I see them in mind’s-eye as if a hanging mobile in an infant’s bedroom - or dangling from a backyard tree.

The tree image fits for all sorts of reasons, too - roots and trunk and branch (well, erm.. branches). One can get far out there, as one seeks to go both deep and wide.

With well over 20,000 in my tree - becoming now almost a small forest - I can manage to recount perhaps hundreds of relatives - for my own amusement and perhaps also to the amazement of others. (I wish I could have remembered geometry theorems and French verbs like that, in former times… but alas!) —

There are just a few dear ones in this movie - gathered from old albums and growing older pictures.

My Heritage now allows you to colourize an old photo - and even, with new AI ‘intelligence’ to show movement. To see movement of face (and more) of fore-bearers long gone and for whom any kind of photography was relatively rare (that word again! — ‘relative’ I mean…), is at once both eerie and enlightening. For many of them it would have been outstandingly so.

But there it is.

And as I ponder from a back-garden swing - or gather from an online sleuthing forêt, I remain generally grateful for these opportunities to meet and greet - if only at a distance, some for the first time in this way, and others who I’ve known - and loved - and lost awhile.
