In this short video, I have compiled a set of buildings and developments built in post-Second World War Europe that were all built under particular political regimes, which either thrived in history books or have been rejected by artists and architects due to the movements they are affiliated with. Each of these monuments were iconic of different revolutionary movements that challenged Eastern and Western European beliefs during the Cold War era. Lev Rudnev’ Palace of Culture and Science is the epitome of the Social Realist movement, which is now seen in a very negative light whereas Aldo van Eyck’s playgrounds in Amsterdam challenged Modernist beliefs. Their reputations are not perpetual, they change according to political, sociological, economic factors and shine underneath those different lights. As the video goes on and more of each building is covered in strips of coloured paper, the original building disappears are we are forced to complete each image ourselves, from memory and assumption. However, as the lights change, our perception changes as well. The coloured papers appear to have changed colours and no longer look like they belong on these images and we get the urge to take them off, to reveal what is underneath or to replace them with a colour that suits the current lit environment. The flashes of different lighting are to create that disturbance and remind us not to get used to the environment simply because it is given to us and to remember these different lighting conditions that we thought were comfortable before, we now see as foreign.
