Hi :) This is a second part of a three part series about previs in Another Day of Life - full feature film about Ryszard Kapuściński and war in Angola. Here I show you previs for a timelapse scene. It’s about the city dying when all of the Portuguese citizens decide to leave the country to avoid the upcoming war. We wanted to show how the city becomes empty, dirty and dangerous in a short period of time. There is also a surreal flavour to that at the end of a scene. Inspired by how Kapuściński wrote about these events. Listen for yourself how a whole life can fit into a wooden box - the voiceover here is a quote from the book. This scene was quite a challange. Everything had to be previsualised - otherwise we couldn’t possibly have the right timing for the camera and character movement. That's why this scene took a lot more time than previs normally does - every car, box and window had to be animated. Some things can be done procudually like trash on the streets. We also developed a nice script to unhide the boxes in the docks of Luanda by adjusting volumes of 3d masks. But the best storytelling effect on main objects you achieve only by hand keyed animation and trial and error. You just have to imagine what could happen here and when. It's more than just random rapid movement on objects. These objects had to tell the story. Please enjoy the comparison between previs and final version of this timelapse scene :)
