The flight path of the ball is affected by such factors as speed, spin, gravity, and even wind. We measure the factors that the pitcher controls: spin and speed. Spin and speed create a force on the ball known as the Magnus force. Movement is the motion of the ball caused by this force. A ball that only drops due to gravity would have no movement. We separate Movement into horizontal and vertical components.

Horizontal Movement (left or right) is measured in inches. It is shown as a positive number when moving to the pitcher’s right and negative when moving to the pitcher’s left.

Vertical Movement (up and down) is measured in inches that a pitch has due to the Lift Force on it. It is shown as a positive number when moving up and negative when moving down. The effects of gravity pulling a pitch down are not part of this metric.
