Reenacted Work by Lygia Clark and Cecilia Vicuña
alternative echelons is a research project to challenge colonial occupation and corporate, capitalist listening.
The first action as research was a three hour long workshop | performance | ritual | protest outside and inside the british military station in Dhekelia, Cyprus. The event focused on a re-choreography of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark's work Baba Antropofágica, Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña's performance Cloud Net, and reading aloud an excerpt of Vicuña's poetry from Spit Temple, translated by Rosa Acala, the text fed to us on selfie sticks.
These actions were chosen in contrast to the activity within the british sovereign land base, in particular the listening station Ayios Nikolaos in Dhekelia. The listening station is part of five eyes, a network of surveillance made through an alliance between the native english speaking countries of the uk, usa, canada, new zealand and australia. It is an agreement to share their intelligence network, and so a tool for the reign of digital imperialism. We draw attention to this site as still being of military importance, and an invisible, pervasive force that perpetuates online discrimination, racial bias and white supremacy.
We chose these works for their material quality – bodies in motion, thread passing through space – as a direct contrast to the Five Eyes network of surveillance in the air of Dhekelia. We are seeking another type of network.
Thank you to Justyna Ataman, Max Franklin, Lygia Clark, Cecilia Vicuña, and all participants.
This project was supported by CBK Rotterdam.
