Ali Baran was born in 1955 in Hozat (Dersim, Tunceli, Turkey). Baran’s father,
Mahmud Baran, was a renowned troubadour (ozan) and he performed at weddings and other
celebrations, playing saz, violin and banjo. He performed songs in Kurmanci,
Zazaki (Kurdish dialect) and Turkish. His mother would generally sing Lavik (laments)
when people died. His grandfather also played violin and tembur. In short,
Ali Baran came from a family with tradition in troubadoring.
His father also sang for Radio Ankara in 1964. His father had considerable influence on Ali Baran.

Baran, who was raised in a household immersed in Kurdish-Alevi Music, plays the drum at the age of 6-7 years. In primary school, he sings in school celebrations where the teacher plays the saz and he sings and takes parts in theatre. He also sings Kurdish songs in weddings.
At the age of 12 he plays the saz on stage by himself. He studies at middle school at Elazig
and during this time makes contact with the Elazig People’s House.
During his time at Elazig middle school and later in lycee (upper high school) he takes part
in theatre and folkloric activities.

He sings in special days and celebrations. Baran becomes influenced by the youth
movement in 1972 and for political reasons he is expelled from Elazig middle school
in 1973. In 1973 Baran goes to Germany to his father’s but returns to Turkey in 1975.
In that year his father dies in an accident.Ali Baran does not return to Germany.
In 1975 he continues his education in Hozat Lycee and for the first time
in 1976 at Hozat he performs a Kurdish song and experiences his first police attack.
Later he continues to take part in concerts in Iskenderun and regions,
Istanbul and in Eastern Turkey. He is subject to police surveillance
and is imprisoned a few times.
In 1977 at Dilan Cinema in Diyarbakir, after a concert in which he performs
in Kurdish, he is arrested and stays in prison for some time.
In late 1978, Baran is forced to return to Germany.

In 1979, Baran commences his studies in chemistry at the Karlsruhe University.
Two years after the 1980 military coup d’état in Turkey he is amongst the first 12 people
to be expelled from Turkey ( along with others including M. Demirag,
S. Yurdatapan and some trade unionists). Baran is forced to seek asylum as a refugee in Germany and this marks the beginning of his life in exile.

After that time he devotes himself to music. His first album,‘ Lo Ware‘ is produced
by Nedim Hazar and marketed by DIDF. Baran himself produces his second album‚
‘Deriye Hepisxane‘ in 1984. Later in 1987 he produces‘Ey Dersime‘. The album makes
Baran turn into a popular artist. In this cassette comprising Kurmanci and Zazaki songs, he also sings one Turkish song.
Baran’s compositions are performed by other artists and groups. In 1989 he releases
‘Helepce u Zindan‘, in 1991 the album ‘Cene Cene‘ is released. In 1993,
after an exile of 15 years, with a German passport and along with M. Demirag and S. Yurdatapan,
he returns to Turkey.
He completes the album ‘Deste ma‘ with Arif Sag and takes part in events
and activities organised by HEP and Deng newspaper. From 1993-2000 he does not produce any new albums. The only exception is that he compiles his German Radio and TV concerts in an album called ‘Live-Konzert‘.

In 1999, exactly 20 years later, Baran returns to the other side of the Euphrat,
to the lands and country he was born in. In 2000, he is reunited with this fans with the album‘Evina me‘ and completes the film clip ‘Em Dixwazin‘. He continues to visit Turkey more frequently.
From 2002-2012 he participates in the Dersim Festival. In 2005, on behalf of Baran Productions,
distributed by Aydin Records, he puts his signature on the album titled ‘Teberik‘.

He films 3 clips called ‘Teberik‘, ‘Medina min‘ and ‘Askin Divanesi‘.
In 2010, he produces the new album ‘Cel Avaz‘, most welcome by his fans.
He continues to make film clips including ‚‘Halim Bilen Yok Dostlar‘
‘Nabi Nabi‘ and 'Cıgera mın Yaro'.Until now Baran has produced a total of 10 albums.
In addition, Baran, holds video casettes of performances
in different Newroz celebrations.
He took part in Newroz activities in Australia, Canada, United States of America, Armenia and in Europe. Since 2011, Baran, father of two children,has lived in Istanbul and Germany
and has continued his musical career.
