After having a total hip replacement surgery, Lee Health physical therapist Tom Pitney says the best thing you can do is start moving. “We find that people who are moving immediately do far, far better and don’t have the complications, and surprisingly enough, as they move more, they have less pain.”

But he says it’s important to make sure you’re moving correctly. “Your body is designed to move a certain way and therapy really strives more than anything else to reproduce the normal way that it’s supposed to move,” he explained.

Physical therapy can teach patients how to move without putting a strain on the repairs and causing pain to other areas of the body. Moving incorrectly can put pressure on the hips, low back, ankles and feet.

“One of the first things we’re going to work on with a patient is first to get their movement back, to get the joint moving, to get the muscles moving. We also want to work especially on safety. Fall prevention is a huge part of this,” Pitney said.

A patient’s activity level and mobility before surgery can also help them have a better recovery after surgery. “The thing that would actually help them more than anything would actually be to work on their range of motion in the hip, that will help it to move better after the surgery,” he said.

Physical therapy can teach exercises like hip rotations, leg raises, and hip extensions before and after surgery—all can help to prevent stiffness and improve range of motion after a total hip replacement.
