When Marie Brolin-Tani offered me this commission, it came with a special caveat, she asked me if I could build a piece around six songs by David Bowie which she had acquired the rights to. It was the kind of dramaturgical conundrum that I love. A space in the dark is not about Bowie per-se, but like our popular culture it is distinctly tainted with his influence. The songs have become a suite to me, a cycle of meditations on the theme of death.
Death does not come at convenient times, but when it does come, it requires whole hearted attention. Through the stages of grief, it offers us a simple and complex invitation; to lovingly remember what we had, to lovingly consider what we have and compassionately face the inevitable truth that death will come to us all. To appreciate it’s teaching fully we need not speak, but instead simply become friends with the mystery.

“You will grieve and grieve and grieve and you'll come up for air and you'll think its all over and you'll be strong and then you'll go back under…Your mind will recite all the ways you've lost the person, that you'll never have the smell of their body…Milk it all, don't push it away. But there will come a time when your mind will quiet down a little bit and in the quietness of that moment, all the love that you've ever tasted with that person will be living and present. And then what you'll realise, is that what the essence was that made you connect with this person has nothing to do with death. The love transcends death, but you're going to have to find it out for yourself." Ram Das
