Sam Cooke was inspired to write "A Change Is Gonna Come" after an event that took place in my hometown, Shreveport, Louisiana, among other struggles faced by blacks during the Civil Rights Movement (1954 – 1968). The incident involved him and his friends being turned away from a whites-only motel. On December 11, 1964, two weeks before the song was to be released as a single, Sam Cooke was fatally shot at a Los Angeles motel. "A Change Is Gonna Come" later became an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. I always felt a connection to this song, so imagine my surprise when I learned it had something to with where I was born and raised.
I do not own the rights to this music.
