“How much time do I/they have?” is a question every patient with cancer wonders about and has often asked their clinician. It is a question we on the other side of the table often dread, and not everyone has the skill to answer it in the way the patient and their loved ones want and need to hear. But do we even have the answers? And if we don’t, is it still important that we provide some guidance so patients and their families can plan for what lies ahead? What do patients need when they ask this question? We will explore this topic from the perspective of a brain tumor and palliative care physician who has researched this topic.

About the presenter: Akanksha Sharma, MD, is board certified in neurology, neuro-oncology and palliative medicine. She is experienced in the treatment of primary/metastatic brain tumors, neurological complications of cancer, and disease-related burden and symptoms. Her clinical and research interests lie in helping patients maximize their time and quality of life. She aims to align treatment with patient goals and to provide holistic care that includes careful symptom assessment and management, as well as support for the patient’s loved ones.
