1983年首次參與電影演出，於侯孝賢導演《兒子的大玩偶》飾演小丑爸爸「坤樹」一角，入圍金馬獎最佳男配角。並於1985年以導演萬仁作品《超級市民》榮獲第22屆金馬獎最佳男配角。
