3D Digital Matte Painting Showreel.

This video showcase two works made with cutting-edge VFX techniques such as camera projection, photogrammetry, deep compositing, and match moving.

In the first scene -an old Tower built during the bronze age- has been brought to life as it probably appaired to be for the people who made it. It's only a fiction reconstruction which does not have any scientific purposes. However, as an artist, I paid attention to the architectural structure of the tower and is engineering feasibility.

The second part of the video shows a corridor. On the floor, I added a clay mask rendered with multicamera projections on a 3d mesh. The mesh is the result of a photogrammetric reconstruction of the real mask, originally sculpted on clay as it appears on the final render. A small painting hangs on the left wall, and a bigger one is visible beyond the door. Both added to the original sequence. The floor and the walls painted over, to add realism to the scene — the movement of the original shot match the virtual camera.
To smooth the camera animation, I only used the first and last keyframe of the tracked camera. Then I cleaned the plate from the table on the first and last frame which were used later as a reference to map the virtual camera.

Similarly, the tower scene is the result of a camera projection with the only difference that, there is not machmoving involved, and the 3d scene has been built around the result of the photogrammetric process. The tower, the terrain around the tower and the trunks of the trees are part of the same 3d model. Everything else has been added later. The sky projected on a sphere; the background mountains and hills projected on a procedural terrain, the fronds of the trees created procedurally. The tower added on top of the photogrammetry.
I created the 3d mesh of the top of the tower from scratch. Then I painted the textures using the photos of the tower remains as a reference. Finally, I projected the textures on the mesh.
I used deep compositing to merge all the elements of the scene. Also, I used some roto-paint techniques to match the top tower with the original photogrammetry.
