Welcome to Vol. 19 of the Sydney Games 21-year-anniversary legacy interview project. This time I am interviewing Jane Spring, who was actually one of the first employees of our Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. For six years, Jane headed up the Games Training challenge.

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) requires the "OCOG"(Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) to procure training venues for athletes to use a few weeks before, during and after the actual 16 days of Olympics and 11 days of the Paralympics.

The "OCOG" (i.e. SOCOG, LOCOG, TOCOG . . . ) . .
then works with 28 "IF's" --International Federations. Think FIFA (football) or FINA (all aquatic sports) or IAAF (athletics, track and field).

(Just to do your head in -- those 28 IFs make up the ASOIF, Association of Summer Olympic International Federations)

These 28 IFs represent the 10,651 athletes and 199 national organising committees (NOCs) in their needs to be completely ready to compete.

(so you acronym fiends -- you now have some new one's: IOC, OCOG, IF, NOC, ASOIF)

Jane thus was the Olympic Queen of Herding Cats. I dare you to even imagine negotiating against this cast of characters for six years.

Over six years, she managed the incredibly complex negotiations, search for the right training venues, procurement of those venues and management of those venues across Australia. There were 75 of them.

And Jane then went on to many senior roles within the NSW Government and the University of Sydney. Having rowed for Sydney University, she was the President of the Women's Rowing Club for 24 years.

She has been commended many times throughout her career, including in :
2000 with the Australian Sports Medal
2006 with the NSW Government Community Service Award
2008 as an Honorary Fellow of the University of Sydney
2010 for Lifetime of Service to Rowing for her 24-years as President
2013 as a National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia
2018 as the Sydney Uni Boat Club announces a scholarship for rowers in Jane's name

I was quite honoured to speak to Jane, and I hope you will enjoy listening to our interview. You may also enjoy reading about her through this link: subc.com.au/post/new-boat-club-scholarship-named-after-jane-spring
