RESIDENCY 42: NOVEMBER 18-DECEMBER 20, 2019
Erik Levine is engaged with representing the world in film form, the main artistic medium
he has used for the past 18 years. His work speaks to the broader human condition and
universal concerns around urgent themes such as alienation, loss, and death. It has
also centered on masculinity and maleness – how it is acted out, embodied,
perpetuated, and personified – and explores human character and the psyche. In his
videos, he records and manipulates spoken and body language, gestures, posture, and
mannerisms, transforming them into video works of art.
Erik works within specific locations, situations, and circumstances to reveal something
larger that speaks to expansive issues. The venues and settings where he gathered his
material have included football fields and baseball diamonds, racetracks, a
slaughterhouse, several geriatric facilities, the circumstances of the untimely murder of
his father, a firefighting academy, and two SWAT teams in training. His aims are to
question the ephemeral nature of life and survival, philosophically and existentially. Erik
