Do you believe the age-old expression that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”?
This phrase is used to describe someone who rejects the opportunity to acquire new knowledge or skills, typically because their habits, ingrained over years, are difficult to change.
This week we are focusing on growth mindset—which is based on a body of work in the field of psychology by renowned motivation expert Dr. Carol Dweck. Growth mindset is the belief that talents, interests, abilities, character, and even intelligence can be developed through effort.
Effort includes hard work, brainstorming ideas, focus, perseverance, and learning from mistakes. But not just effort--- growth mindset isn’t praise for trying hard—it’s valuing the learning process along the way. Growth mindset is what happens when you don’t succeed—but you reframe what many see as failure and ask yourself: What can I learn from this and what can I do differently next time?
At the other end of the spectrum is what we call a fixed mindset— the belief that our qualities are what we are born with---and, for the most part, they are unchangeable. Dweck wrote in her bestselling book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” that “people who have a fixed mindset do not understand how powerful and effective effort is.
Fixed mindset approaches intelligence, sports ability, intellectual knowledge, workplace talent and much more with the belief that a person is born strong in an area, or not. The irony here is that people with a fixed mindset are actually less likely to take on new challenges because they believe that trying something new----and possibly failing at it—----will change peoples’ opinions of them, and specifically of their potential. In other words, a fixed mindset is governed by a fear of failure.
In her work, Carol Dweck offers us a dose of reality that we should all take to heart: Nobody has growth mindset in everything all of the time. The key, therefore, is to identify some of the key elements of our lives where we must work hard to pursue a growth mindset....because when we embrace this mindset, we embrace challenges.
In these moments, we view obstacles and even mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.....which makes us feel empowered to take risks and keep trying until we learn and improve.
We have a lot to unpack this week and I can't wait to get to it. Please remember, the C in RCI stands for culture. Listening to this video and reading the daily emails might be helpful, but the much deeper impact happens when we talk to others about these concepts and take the conversation to a much deeper, applied level. I hope you have a great week, so let's go!
