The city of Portland, Oregon has a long and storied history of a vibrant, at times persecuted, and still thriving African American community in NE Portland, surrounded by the growing (in size and cost) neighborhoods of Williams, Mississippi, and Alberta. A major part of NE Portland’s pride and community history is rooted in the High School Basketball scene within the PIL (Portland’s public school high school league). From the 70s through today, Portland, Oregon has produced scores of professional basketball caliber talent, and many of the players who have come up in NE Portland continue to live in the area and give back by training the next generation of Portland basketball players. The history and current pride and passion for local high school basketball, is an untold story of Portland, Oregon, a city where many other stories are already being told.
PORTLAND’S OWN is a feature length documentary that will tell the story of Portland high school basketball, past and present, and the history of NE Portland’s African American community.
