After children have a general understanding that words make up sentences, they are ready to play with compound words - a beginning introduction to the idea that words can have more than one sound. Working with two syllable compound words is easier than just 2 syllable words. It is easier to blend football from foot and ball, as they are both common words to most children, versus blending sofa from so and fa - sounds that are not words. Teaching about or playing with blending words should transpire before segmenting or taking apart the two parts of a word. Blending is linked to reading, segmenting linked to writing. Therefore, blending should come before segmenting, as you want to get children starting to read some words before they need to start writing them. Also, blending is a slightly easier skill to master as it relies more on listening
After blending and segmenting, try eliminating.
The following activities share ways to do this.
