A few practical horse care tips for those that may be new to the country life - No. 1 WATER
Given that seasons are moving and that the first proper cold weather has landed in the last few weeks, it is likely that over the coming weeks it will continue to get colder with temperatures dropping (and possible snow). The colder weather will require careful management and checking of water supplies.
Water is fundamentally and crucial for horses. Cases of laminitis can increase due to lack of water for your horse - so a good source of water (NOT ice) must be available at all times.
The issue of water also tends to link with poaching and grazing; given the amount of wet weather we have had over the past months - the result is that we have excessively wetland leading to lots of mud at and around both gateways and water troughs.
As with everything, prevention is better than cure and so preparing the areas around gates and water with scalpings (recycled road tarmac), or hardcore is the way forward. It is also likely that you may have had to move horses to alternative grazing given the level of rain we have had - this will also mean that you don’t necessarily have water and troughs on-site as before. As mentioned, making sure that enough water is always available, and not frozen, is vitally important.
There are a number of various water heaters and elements on the market that make this possible; however, the only way is regular visits to the field and checking. Top tip: Make the water more insulated by digging a hole for the container and lowering it in plus reducing the exposed area with a cover. Check levels at least twice a day. If you need to break the ice, make sure you take it out of the water. Have more than one water source and create containers as large as possible. There are many ideas about putting in tennis balls and alike to prevent the build-up of ice - but I would recommend a visit as the best way.
