Students at West Central Area North Elementary School in Elbow Lake, Minnesota receive a well-rounded education in class sizes small enough for the teachers to get to know each student well, including in an after school program. Principal Natalie Prasch, teacher Melissa Anderson and parents Shelli Allen and Matt Allen explain…

Melissa: "As a teacher at North Elementary we strive to meet each kid's individual learning needs. We work with kids in small groups for either enrichment or remedial help. It's exciting to work with such small class sizes. Most of our classes are 20 kids or less. It's such a great gift."

Shelli: "The class sizes are nice and small. The teachers are able to not only know what the kids need academically, but interpersonally because they know their personalities so well."

Melissa: "Our community is so supportive of all our ideas and adventures. For example, our very active Parent-Teacher Organization supports us with individual classroom projects or field trips to places in our area."

Shelli: "I love that the school takes them out to Andes Tower Hills and gives them a day to experience the snow."

Matt: "Being on the Elbow Lake Fire Department we're very happy to partner with WCA every Fall to do fire prevention week. We get them outside in the back. They get to run through all of our trucks, spray some water. Great way for us to be involved in the community."

Melissa: "Our community is huge in supporting some of our bigger ideas such as our STEAM classes where we focus on science and technology, engineering, arts, math and more".

Matt: "Our kids really enjoy the STEAM classes. It's a great way for them to apply their math and science skills that they're learning during the day to very practical purposes."

Melissa: "I work with he best staff around who value each student's well-rounded experiences. Our students have Phy. Ed, music, and technology opportunities every day. Even though we're very balanced in how we teach our students with books and good old fashioned pencils and notebooks, we strive to balance with a good amount of technology. Our classes have smart boards. Our students use other devices such as lap tops, chrome books, kindles and iPads to help practice the skills that they need."

Natalie: "At North Elementary we also offer a daycare for our students. So if students enter into our Little Mites Programming they can then on the opposite times attend our daycare programming, and then if they enter our Kindergarten Connection programming on opposite days they can then attend our daycare programming. And that mirrors the curriculum that the students are learning in the classroom. So it's a continuous learning process for our students. Then for our families who are working, the students are actually with us the entire school day. So if there are older siblings who also attend with us, they can ride the bus with them; however, we do also offer after school care, which begin at 3:30 and goes on until 5:30. So the child has a safe to be right at the school. They never have to leave. They never have to pick up and go any place. They're always right here with us."
