As Australia struggles to secure its own supply of vaccines, global inequities in access to COVID-19 vaccines are becoming increasingly stark, leading the Director-General of the World Health Organization to warn of an impending “catastrophic moral failure”. High income countries have monopolised the global supply of vaccines, threatening the ability of low and middle-income countries to vaccinate even their frontline workers and most vulnerable groups before the end of 2021. If these inequities are not corrected, they will cause many thousands of preventable deaths, cost the global economy trillions and needlessly prolong the pandemic, with the risk of variants emerging in areas of uncontrolled transmission threatening the whole world’s recovery.
Vaccinating the world soon enough means rich countries will need to share the vaccine supplies they have already secured. But it won’t be enough just to donate vaccines from existing supplies - there is not enough to go around. The rights, know-how and technology to make and sell COVID-19 vaccines are currently tightly held by a small number of pharmaceutical companies. Rapidly increasing the manufacture and supply of vaccines will require removing legal and technical barriers to enable low and middle-income countries to make their own.
This webinar explores ways to remove these legal and technical barriers, by waiving intellectual property rights and ensuring technology transfer. It focuses on practical actions the Australian Government can take to contribute to a fairer distribution and adequate supply of vaccines globally, and the role health workers and academics can play in holding the Government to account.
