Westernized institutions of healthcare have limited the ways through which we are able to practice care with one another. These limitations inhibit our ability to process the experiences of trauma embedded within our urban landscapes. From the ways neighborhoods are divided to the aesthetics of our city halls, the sediments of histories built up around our urban landscapes perpetuate narratives of oppression, displacement and difference. As citizens of these shared experiences this trauma is cumulative, becoming enmeshed in the cellular histories of our bodies. The science of epigenetics demonstrates that the body is a living, fleshy archive of knowledge, shaping our relationship with the world, as the information that we store in our cells is passed on from one generation to the next.
