Design is a dynamic discipline, crossing with different other disciplines and contexts while adjusting its production accordingly. In brief, it is possible to track the evolution of design discipline from arts and craft, moving to design in relation to mass production and industry, design evolving into design brands, until entering exhibition spaces, from the more commercial-oriented such as galleries to institutions such as museums acquiring pieces for their collections.

What happens when a design project in its prototypical form is acquired by an institution, such as a museum?

In exhibition spaces, it is possible to read technological development in relation to cultural development. Such as the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace that happened in London, back in 1851. The concept behind it as the celebration of modern industrial technology and design is now designated to exhibition spaces.

Yet, nowadays, when a design enters exhibition spaces, the way we are informed about it deploys whether narratives of function/dysfunction of the design as an object or narratives of cultural production and awareness contemplating the design as a symbolic gesture.
