Immersed in the ecosystems of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and working with biologists, Lauren Shapiro captured the impressions of endangered Florida plants by making non-toxic silicone molds. The culmination of her project resulted in a site-specific installation of the flora, artfully recreated in unfired clay. Due to the transitory nature of the material, the piece eventually dries and cracks over time while staying attached to a wooden and wire mesh framework mounted to an architectural element as she records the process through photographs and video. Through the educational programming at Fairchild, this artwork was created by inviting the greater community to participate in a series of workshops, pressing clay into the molds and onto the framework. After the project’s conclusion, the pieces of the sculpture were broken down into dry dust and recycled with water for reuse. Clay is tangible, tender and accessible to people from all walks of life, including the visually impaired. The goal of this project was to inspire others to form a more personal connection to the material and to our current environmental plight and its effects on ecological systems.
