The relief cutting of wood panels (kerfing method) is widely known in furniture and woodworking industries where simple curvy shapes are desired. In their current applications, the shapes of kerf wood panels are fixed, and shape reconfigurations are precluded. The inherent characteristics of kerf panels, which are attributed to their cut patterns, are compliant and flexible, allowing for multiple and easy shape reconfigurations of the kerf surfaces. Owing to these characteristics, we redefine the purpose of the kerfing method beyond mainly achieving complex shapes.
To achieve localized flexibility and complex form, we developed an algorithm to design multiple kerfing-line angles for fine-tuning adjustment of the kerfing patterns parametrically. Multi-directional kerfing patterns allow the material to bend in a variety of directions, making complex forms.
