Shark research in Fiji has steadily grown over the last few years with several papers published in peer-reviewed journals. One of the more recent ones was our open access paper published in 2018 in the journal Ecology and Evolution, which can be accessed here:

In the frame of Fiji's voluntary commitments at the UN Ocean Conference in 2017, she also aims to protect all important shark and ray habitats. While this can only work in cooperation with the affected local stakeholders, the first step is always to gather data to describe the situation.

We have caught three shark species in the bay:
1. Blacktip sharks
2. Scalloped hammerhead sharks
3. Great hammerhead sharks

and witnessed several times the capture of bull sharks in the rivers by local fisherman.

The Ba estuary is definitely an important area for sharks that deserves more attention.
