Welcome to QUEER ART TV: LLM Learning Moments. This week, the Museum's teaching artists and educators Camilo Godoy, Savannah Knoop, and Buzz Slutzky analyze a work of art from the Leslie-Lohman collection, “Jane Heap" (circa 1928), by #BereniceAbbott, and propose an activity, to engage with the artwork at home. Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) was an American photographer known for photographing #NewYorkCity architecture and urban life, as well as portraits of important cultural figures such as Jane Heap, who was a notable literary magazine editor. Abbott was not publicly out as a lesbian during her lifetime, despite being openly partnered with Elizabeth McCausland within her social circle. This video discusses Abbott’s relationship to queer identity, artistic lineage, formalism, and history.

Learning Moments is a new series of educational videos grounded in works from the Leslie-Lohman Museum collection. This series is facilitated by our Teaching Artists who typically work with gender and sexuality alliances in New York City schools. Each video is accompanied by an activity you can do at home in response to the lesson and is appropriate for all ages (not just kids).
