2021-22 VS Course Introduction

At 705 km above us, in a sun-synchronous low earth orbit, the eyes of remote sensing help us to understand the world, its changing conditions and their unexpected impacts. Observing and detecting in light signatures and wavelengths invisible to our human eyes, they reveal what they see to us in otherworldly false colors. From shrinking sea ice to expanding wildfires, long lost civilizations to newly discovered habitats; the images they produce not only show us the direct correlation between the cause and effects of our collapsing environment, they transcend facts and figures and tell us stories of our world that the graphs and charts cannot. In this seminar, we will experiment with remote sensing imaging - the technology that has traditionally been used to map and monitor the current conditions, will be repurposed to imagine and speculate the future consequences of the Anthropocene. We will project our follies and exploits, our ingenuities and endeavors; we will reveal our hopes and fears at the scale of the planet. Remote sensing will be explored not only as a scientific instrument, but also a speculative medium, its images not just maps of the planet but culturally transformative artifacts. Through these visions, we will traverse the post climate world, across its landscapes, epochs, scales and resolutions to explore what possible futures await us all. In these futures, would engineered straight lines begin to soften, and borders and boundaries finally dissolve? Would the ultraviolet light feeding all the agriculture of the world render the Earth pink?
