A simple and beautiful exercise for young children. With just 5 smooth, wooden boxes this activity is engaging and achievable for older infants and toddlers. When your child outgrows the Nesting/Stacking exercise the Nesting Boxes easily turn into five lovely containers or display boxes for little treasures.

The Natural Boxes are from Grimm's Spiel and Holz, so it features the aesthetic beauty and impeccably high-quality that this world-renowned brand is known for. It is made of lime wood and features non-toxic, water based stains. The largest box measures 10cm x 10cm with the size of each of the following boxes decreasing by 1.5cm increments down to the smallest box of 4cm x 4cm.

Many parents and educators will be familiar with the concept of 'nesting' activities. These experiences provide an opportunity for young children to explore concepts of size and encourages them to begin to recognise patterns and sequences. The Natural Boxes can be used, as the name suggests, for the child to place them in order from largest to smallest with each box resting inside the preceding size. The Boxes can also be flipped over and treated like building blocks to make a tower structure.

When used in the traditional 'nest' format the Boxes provide a self-correcting mechanism; if one box is placed out of order during the sequence then the child will find that another box will not fit at the end. This creates a classic Montessori-opportunity to engage in self-correction and problem-solving.

The bowls are particularly beautiful because of their simplicity. Rather than the gaudy decorations and distractingly bright colours found on many nesting/stacking activities these Natural Boxes allow the innate beauty of the wood to shine through! The grain of the wood is clearly visible and even the finish is soft and natural, rather than overly shiny or glossy. The sensory appeal of the wood is also felt by the fingertips; the smooth walls of the bowls are particularly delightful for little fingers to explore!

The Natural design also means that the boxes can be repurposed as storage containers when a child has outgrown the stacking and nesting stage.

When children are using nesting materials they aren't simply playing or building they are experimenting, they are problem-solving, they are developing critical thinking skills!! Nesting materials are so incredibly easy to find and they provide exceptional learning opportunities. We love to use nesting materials as they can help support and develop:

dexterity and fine motor skills
counting skills
gross motor skills - especially in larger materials like the large wooden nesting boxes.
awareness of shapes and size
grasp and release movements
visual and spatial perception / visual discrimination
hand-eye coordination
opportunities for crossing the midline
concentration
language - 'pass', 'in', 'up', 'big', 'bigger', 'biggest', 'small', 'smaller', 'smallest'
sequencing skills
creativity - for example, we love to build with our metal condiment cups in different ways making spaceships and pyramids.
problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The child will often trouble-shoot, why doesn't this work, why won't this fit.
the child's natural schemas. They can support transporting or connecting schemas and the dump and fill phase that many children experience.
Nesting materials are easy to source as you can often find items from around the house like nesting containers, baskets, bowls, measuring cups or storage containers. You can start really simply with just two of the nesting items and build up to however many pieces you have in the set, it's easy to adjust the nesting activity to the skills of the child.
