জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে বড় পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়টি ১৯৯২ সালে জাতীয় সংসদে আইন পাসের মাধ্যমে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সদর দপ্তর গাজীপুরের সুন্দর সবুজ এলাকা দ্বারা বেষ্টিত মনোরম পরিবেশে যা দেশের রাজধানী শহর ঢাকা থেকে মাত্র ৩০ কিলোমিটার দূরে অবস্থিত। বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলির তুলনায় জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একটি ভিন্নতর বৈশিষ্ট হল এটি একটি অফ-ক্যাম্পাস ইউনিভার্সিটি, অবশ্য বর্তমানে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়টিতে স্বল্প পরিসরে কিছু অন-ক্যাম্পাস প্রোগ্রাম চালু ররেছে। প্রশাসনিক কার্যক্রম আরও গতিশীল করার জন্য বিভাগীয় পর্যায়ে ছয়টি আঞ্চলিক কার্যালয় স্থাপন করেছে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়টি। জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সারা দেশের সকল সরকারি এবং বেসরকারি কলেজের মাধ্যমে গ্রাজুয়েট, স্নাতক এবং স্নাতকোত্তর পর্যায়ে শিক্ষা কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করে থাকে। প্রতিষ্ঠানটিতে প্রায় ২২৪৯ টি কলেজ/প্রতিষ্ঠান অধিভুক্তি রয়েছে, যার মধ্যে ২৭৫টি সরকারি, ১৯৭৪টি বেসরকারি কলেজ/প্রতিষ্ঠান। জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীনে প্রায় ২৪ লাখেরও বেশি শিক্ষার্থী অধায়ণ করে থাকেন।

National University, Bangladesh Established in 1992 by an Act of Parliament of Bangladesh as an affiliating University, the National University caters the general education at graduate and post-graduate level in colleges/professional institutions hitherto remained affiliated to different public universities in the country. More than 2.8 million students (Male 1.5 and Female 1.3) are studying in 2300 colleges/institutions (Government 275, Non-government 2000; Honours 770+, Masters [both preliminary and final] 145; Women’s 123) affiliated to this university.

The University is located in a beautiful place surrounded by greenery all around in the district called Gazipur, which is just 30 km away from the country capital city, Dhaka. Unlike other universities of Bangladesh, the National University is an off-campus University spread to the length and breath of the country through its affiliated bodies. Besides the Headquarters in Gazipur, there are six Regional Centers in six administrative divisions to run the affairs of the University.

The University offers BA, BSS, BBS, B.Sc., Post-graduate and Professional degrees through field level institutions. However, it also conducts MS, M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes on a limited scale at the Gazipur campus. The National University is expanding in terms of number of students, courses and institutions day by day.
