1. New Day (March 2021) - 1:06 min (30 sec. excerpt) Director, cinematographer, editor, writer
Assignment: “Make a video that employs at least one of the following techniques: split screen, glitch, multiple exposures/layering, chroma key.”
This shows progression in creative freedom, writing style, and editing such as the frame manipulations (glitch, split-screen, opacity changes). I am proud of this video because I feel that I included elements I learned from each week of these courses and allowed myself to create something that had been on my mind for a long time.
2. Pssst... (November 2020) - 2 min (1:05 min. excerpt) Director, cinematographer, editor, writer
Assignment: “Write and shoot a dialogue sequence with a minimum of 10 shots. Use a conventional approach to the creation of cinematic space. You must have each of the following: establishing shot, shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, cut on action.”
This video was one that had more of a narrative approach to it, but I think the biggest improvement was staying extra cautious of respecting the 180 rule, as well as using a variety of shots to give the story more continuity.
3. On the Move (November 2020) - 1:12 min (42 sec. excerpt)
Director, cinematographer, editor
Assignment: “...make a video of at least 30 seconds composed entirely of single-frame stills. (At 24 fps, that’s a minimum of 720 stills—so get shooting!) Your approach can be anything from a pixilated play (à la Norman McLaren’s “Two Bagatelles”) to a time-lapse narrative (as in Peter Greenaway’s “A Zed and Two Naughts”) to a documentary portrait (like in Emma Green-Hope’s “Gan-Gan”) to an experimental film focusing on form, color, etc.”
This video was a fun video that I liked because the speed at which the editing shows my surroundings was so fast that it might have been overwhelming, but allowed me to explore an area of filming and editing that I had yet to do before this project.
4. Meet Albin (September 2020) - 0:54 sec. (whole video)
Director, cinematographer, editor, writer
Assignment: “Choose a person, place or thing and make a portrait of around 1 minute.”
As my first assignment in this course, I really liked the simplicity that came together to be a perfect representation of my cousin. I was proud of the lighting, colors, variety of shots, as well as this video showing how much more visually creative I grew throughout this class, when comparing to my other projects.
5. Existential Sounds (February 2021) - 0:58 sec. (whole video)
Sound editor
Assignment: “Create a completely new, original soundtrack for an already existing video made by a classmate (can be from 2201 or 2).”
This project was filmed and edited by Abby Elliott, but after getting her permission, I made the new soundtrack that is heard in this video. I am especially proud of all the different sounds I was able to make for the repetitive shots in the beginning, how well all the sounds matched what was being shown, and the added element of sound that originally had nothing to do with her story, but worked with the expressions she showed.
6. Shades (November 2020) - 1:00 (40 sec. excerpt) Director, editor
Assignment: “Make a project that uses an editing approach inspired by one of the examples that we watched in class & that uses a logic different from conventional narrative cinema.”
This video was one that I was happy with because I liked the freedom that given with this project, and learning the possibilities of found footage. I think this video was what inspired my drive to continue to make experimental style films as I want to get better, because experience with several genres could help development in many more.
7. All a Cycle (January 2021) - 1:00 (28 sec. excerpt) Director, cinematographer, editor
Assignment: “Choose a place you find interesting, preferably off campus, and observe its activity with a camera. (Think about time of day!) Record five different shots. (Don't worry about the sound here; you will be stripping off and deleting the audio from your picture tracks.) Then focus on sound and use your recording device to collect 6 different wild sounds: two separate 1-minute clips of ambience, and four effects. Bring these sound and image files to class. Keep in mind that your goal is to give your audience a "sense of place" -- what your chosen location feels, sounds, and looks like.”
In this project, I was especially proud of the underlying story that I was able to create with such an ordinary object. I liked the sounds that strongly related to the objects, making it very clear as to where I was, but also giving a clue to the underlying story because some of the sounds sounded similar to one that is typically heard in this “cycle” of life.
