Migration: From the ‘Self’ to Digital

Through data collection, algorithms and coding, I have created an installation which creates two digital representations of yourself through generative processing.

Companies are capable of using such technology for good or bad intentions. They can then capitalise off this data to sell you products, sell information or to even register your credit score and well-being.

We actively choose to share ourselves through social media and online services by giving away our most personal details. How do applications and companies store information about you? How are we viewed by organisations and services we ‘trust’ our most personal data with?

Personal data could give us the power to improve the world around us and we should be in control of our own data. How are companies in possession of this technology and our data, use it to view and build profiles on us?

My installation is inspired by this concept of the value and perspective technology has on our daily lives. What I have created might be a fun and harmless simulation but it’s a stark reality of how we are migrating to a digital age in which companies can use such technology and data to build a ‘visual self’ of us.

I ask you if it’s a positive or negative change for our society?
