The Class of 2021 took an experiential education trip to Columbus, Ga. and Troy University for a hands-on examination of human impact on the health of the Chattahoochee River. Students collected samples from the river, classified macro-invertebrates as bioindicators and recorded the data for use in the Alabama Public Water Works database. Students also worked to clean the river and its banks and learned about the historical and contemporary impact of human development on the river. Furthermore, students investigated the impact of the removal of spill dams, the subsequent restoration of the river ecosystem and the revitalization of the riverfront. They even found time for some adventure through whitewater rafting and zip-lining.
