Early on there are often no symptoms but as the disease worsens, person may become tired, weak, itchy, have swelling in lower legs, develop yellow skim, bruise easily, have ascites or develop spider like blood vessels on skin.

Commonly it is caused by alcohol, hepatitis B and other fatty liver diseases. If the cause is removed at this stage, the changes are fully reversible.

The cirrhosis pathology outlines the development of scar tissue that replaces normal parenchyma. This scar tissue blocks the portal flow of blood through the organ, raising the blood pressure and disturbing normal function.

The spleen becomes congested, which leads to hypersplenism and the spleen's retention of platelets, which are needed for normal blood clotting. Portal hypertension is responsible for the most severe complications of cirrhosis.

Aim of treatment is to prevent further liver damage. Transplantation is done in case of life-threatening condition.
