This summer, Drs. Shawn Bubel (BSc '96) and Kevin McGeough (BA ’96) from the Department of Geography & Environment are offering their annual archaeological field school opportunity at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in southern Alberta. Students are currently participating in hands-on learning at an excavation site while earning course credit.
Their work aims to clarify chronological and contextual issues related to the earliest occupation phases at the site, evaluate the relationships between different parts of the site and identify earlier uses than those currently well-documented.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an interpretive centre run by Blackfoot staff. The public is welcome to visit this remarkable site and learn more about its history and cultural significance, as over two million visitors have since 1987. And while you are there, don’t forget to check out the active excavations and speak to uLethbridge professors and students.
