This is a basic explanation of my animation process for the “He Won’t Hold You” music video by Jacob Collier (feat. Rapsody) that you can watch here: vimeo.com/danielbruson/he-wont-hold-you.

I was completely dedicated to this project for around 90 days in self isolation from mid April to early July 2020 during which I hand painted around 1200 drawings, using a technique that mixes digital and paper animation I've been developing since 2013. Jacob reached out to me after he saw some of my work online and we had great talks and an amazing collaboration throughout the process.

One thing I didn’t cover in detail in this breakdown is the inverted luminance part of the animation. That means that some shots are planned and painted in negative, so the black ink on paper will be white in the final video, and the white paper will become black in the video. You can see that at 1:20. Sometimes it demands a little rewiring of the brain but it’s possible. :)
