This video illustrates how teachers can use the reflection in the mirror vertically and horizontally in order to teach the Freestyle drill that we call Sticky Big Arms, Six Kick Switch, or Lift-Pull-Stop. Many rookie students do not finish the the Lift part of the arm swing, which is also known as the Recovery, with one arm next to their head and the other arm next to their leg. A rookie student might appear to swim like a crab. Watching their arms swing around in the mirror can help them understand the correct arm placement. Also - using the mirror like this is an easy way to teach the overlapping concept where the bottom or back arm (that is down by the leg) must LIFT before the other front or top arm (that is up at the top, by the head) does the PULL. This way the common error where both arms end up at the legs at the same time is prevented. After practicing in the vertical mirror, the teacher can hold the student horizontally over the same mirror that is placed on the floor of the pool and swim in place, while asking them to duplicate what was just taught. THEN, watch how I slid the mirror with my foot while I moved the student doing the arm swings from one place to the other.
It is convenient to do this at the Seal Beach pool, because the mirror can be lodged between the rail and the corner steps, using an animal foam float shape. The mirror is normally stored and used on top of a frame near these steps, so it is convenient to move it over to the step area for this drill.
In the next segment, you will see how Miss Regan used the mirror as feedback for the first time when teaching a beginner Freestyle student. She tried Mr. Quan’s idea of using the Red Light/Green Light game to teach her student the timing and placement for her arm swings.
