At the center of the Milky Way, and perhaps all galaxies, lurk supermassive black holes. These cosmic behemoths are millions to billions of times more massive than our Sun. For reasons not yet fully understood, they drive immensely powerful “jets” into intergalactic space.
The next-generation Very Large Array will study the origin and impact of these jets on their galactic neighborhoods, giving us more information about how supermassive black holes influence star formation and how galaxies change over cosmic time.
