On April 22, 2008, the U.S. Air Force officially retired the F-117 Nighthawk. It is known as the first operational aircraft developed around stealth technology. Despite having been officially retired, Nighthawks have been sighted in flight on several occasions since 2008.

The shape and color of the aircraft contribute to the reduction and minimization of visibility on radar. Due to it’s odd shape, many have indicated its seemingly alien appearance when compared to other man-made aircraft.

The Nighthawk was developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division and first took flight in June of 1981 at Groom Lake, Nevada. The craft became deployable in 1983 and was utilized in combat in 1989.

The name of the aircraft is misleading since the F-117 Nighthawk is technically not a fighter and was designed as an attack aircraft.

The U.S. Air Force has an inventory of approximately 60 Nighthawks, which are set to be demilitarized. According to Popular Mechanics, “the Air Force must send one Nighthawk in 2017 to be demilitarized—that is, have their weapons systems and anything classified professionally stripped out. After that, four Nighthawks must be de-milled until the entire fleet is gone. The entire process will take nearly fifteen years.”
