The installation “Conversation between two without one” questions the relationship of aesthetics of sustainability to the tools and practices of design. The work consists of 9 photos of the original Ungers’ sketches dated back to 1980 and a drawing machine that reproduces them during the expo.
The original sketches were printed on the crumpled grey thin paper with traces of coffee on them as homage to clumsy way of work, which Ungers was known for. Stroke by stroke the drawing machine slowly repeats his drawings during the time of exhibition. The aim is to provoke a conversation on the role of a sketch in design practice, especially related to the sustainable architecture. which lately become associated with techno-science-problem-solving. While the drawing machine simply executes preset commands, the sketching allows one to test, to search, to enter a dialog. The sketch invites one to speculate and dream, to invent. As to sustainability, we can shift from just solving environmental problems to adding new values and sustainable qualities to the surrounding by inventing and sketching, as Ungers did with the Solar house.
