‘Chikyuchi’ is a virtual pet game aiming to engage audiences with the ecological crisis and decline of natural landscapes. Rather than solely using visual language relating to nature, this work uses pop and consumer culture vocabulary that is more familiar and intimate to many urban contemporary audiences.
There is currently one Chikyuchi species: Amazonchi, representing the Amazon rainforest. Machine-learning AI (model GPT-2) analyses Tweets regarding the Amazon deforestation and enables Amazonchi to talk about itself like humans do.
The health of Amazonchi is in sync with the actual state of decline of the Amazon rainforest through API data measuring the Amazon’s rapidly shrinking surface. Although users can temporarily cheer up the Amazonchi with thematically related food and games, increasing their mood status, it doesn't affect their critical health status. It can only recover if the actual Amazon rainforest recovers. The use of machine learning and computable devices for interaction serves to stimulate dialog about ecological state of our world and necessity for ‘caring’ for our world in a way that will actually heal it.
