AI holds enormous promise to transform health care -- the advent of large datasets from EHRs coupled with advances in machine learning could fundamentally change the processes of diagnosis, risk stratification, therapeutic decisions, and resource allocations. However, the hype of AI has led to the proliferation of predictive models with little assurance that they can improve health outcomes without unintended negative consequences. Healthcare organizations are now faced with the difficult task of navigating this new landscape with little guidance. In this talk, Dr. Poon will discuss the approach clinical and IT leaders at Duke have taken to manage the life-cycle of predictive models developed and deployed for patient care to ensure models are not only safe and effective, but also reliable and maintainable. Dr Poon's talk will also illustrate how the FDA draft guidance on 'Software as a Medical Device' can be applied throughout the life-cycle of AI.
