Zia Tollette attends Little Rock’s Central High School, a school most known for resisting the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954. It took three years before nine black students, known as the Little Rock Nine, were escorted to school by National guards and six years later to desegregate all schools in Little Rock. The stories of the nine students who fought to attend Tollette’s high school six decades ago made a deep impression on her. She is now part of a student-led club that preserves the lessons of the civil and human rights struggles of the past. She is politically active and participated in a recent national school walkout. Though she believes the school has not yet achieved the ideal the Little Rock Nine had hoped for, today Central High is one of the most diverse high schools in Arkansas and there are encouraging signs of unity.
