Reef Ecologic has been assisting the recovery of Whitsunday Reefs through innovative coral gardening techniques. Some things have worked, others have faced their challenges. At the end of the day success will be determined by our ability to improve the overall coral cover and by extension overall reef biodiversity at target locations compared to those where no restoration work is undertaken.

While we have developed over 2400 coral colonies in our nurseries so far we have only outplanted 357 if these in two locations - Blue Pearl and Manta Ray Bay. Recent monitoring highlights that many of the corals are surviving well and helping to improve coral cover and diversity at target reefs. Definitive successful outcomes are still some way off but we are tracking well. The next step will be to assess the performance of our corals throughout recent bleaching. Mid-year we hope to outplant over 1000 more corals.
