Blind Spot #1 – Not Having a Process for Hiring

This blind spot is focused on hiring or, more specifically, not having a solid process for hiring.

At some point we all hire people. It could happen only once in a great while of it could happen literally every day.

Have a good look at the people in your organization, they are the result of how you hire. Good, bad or otherwise, they are there because of what you did or didn’t do in the hiring process.

How many times have you felt frustrated by the people in your business who don’t or won’t do this or that? Is that their fault or is it a symptom of the deficit in your hiring process?

My guess would be the latter.

If we brought in people with the right skills, the proper desire and those that fit our culture, most of your frustration would disappear.

Question: Could your managers write down your actual hiring process?

Likely you could get a general sketch of how it’s done, but in reality, everyone is looking at different things. Asking different questions and exercising their own individual biases when it comes to hiring.

There is no way to legitimately compare candidates, it’s too subjective.

How do you make the process objective, reduce the cost of turnover and increase individual productivity?

Tips:
1. Create a job profile for every position. What is required for success in that position? For example, In sales… is this a high-ticket or low-ticket sale, a transactional or relationship sale, short sales cycle or long, hunter of farmer, etc.
2. Create an applicant profile. Determine what type of candidate would likely be a best fit in that role. Look at skill set, attitude or mindset, cognitive skills, habits, etc. Use this document as a guard rail to keep you focused.
3. Develop great questions. These should drive at the heart of determining best-fit. They should be very specific.
4. When hiring, most of us rely on our gut, our artful skills. This won’t work anymore. You must apply science to the process. Job profile + applicant profile + great questions lead to great hires
5. Make sure everyone involved in hiring is on the same page. Including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding and continuous development.

Your people are your biggest asset. Investing time and energy in a good hiring process will surely present a desirable ROI.

Don’t let this be a blind spot for you.
