This duo was formed in the in the early 50s when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met at school. After being in a group called "The Peptones" they first became a duo as "Tom & Jerry". They released their first single in 1957 called "Hey, Schoolgirls" which charted and reached #49 in the US Billboard single charts. After they graduated both went on their own ways before reunited in 1963 again. This time they called themselves "Kane & Garr" and performed at an open mic night including a song called "Sound Of Silence". In 1964 they finally released their first studio album called "Wednesday Morning, 3.A.M." The album sold very poorly and Paul Simon soon moved to England.
Meanwhile a DJ in Boston started playing "Sound Of Silence" and the song became popular with a college audience. Producer Tom Wilson remixed the song without informing Simon or Garfunkel and the song began to rise in the Billboard Single Charts. Paul Simon was said to be horrified when he heard the remixed version for the first time. January 1966 the song topped the chart and sold over one milliion copies. Simon returned to the USA and reunited with Garfunkel. They quickly rush released an album called "Sounds Of Silence", reaching #21 in the US album charts. Later that year they released their next studio album "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme". It peaked at #4 in the US album charts.
Meanwhile director Mike Nichols filmed "The Graduate" and liked the sound of Simon & Garfunkel, so he asked them if he could use a song for his movie. First Paul Simon declined but after reading the skript he agreed and they finally offered "Mrs. Robinson" for the movie. In 1968 they released their next studio album called "Bookends" - it climbed to #1 in the US Billboard album charts. At the Grammy Awards in 1969 "Mrs. Robinson" became the first Rock & Roll song to receive "Record Of The Year" and it also won the award for "Best Contemporary Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group". Then both tried their chops in acting but Paul Simon's part in the movie Catch-22 was scratched.
Their final studio album called "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was released in 1970 and charted in 11 countries, topping the charts in 10 including the USA and United Kingdom. It was the best selling album of 1970, 71 and 72 and became the best-selling-album of all time during that span. It has sold over 25 million units worldwide. The title track also became a #1 single for the duo. In 1971 the album received 6 Grammy Awards including "Album of the Year". Shortly thereafter the duo broke up but reunited multiple times for concerts. Even though they tried and record companies pushed for it they were never able to record another studio album as a duo.
