FOLK MUSIC LEGENDS THE KINGSTON TRIO RELEASE NEW RECORDING OF
"ARMSTRONG" TO MARK 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING OF APOLLO 11

As the country prepares to mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a one-of-a-kind tribute is being released from a somewhat unexpected quarter: the world of folk music. American folk icons The Kingston Trio, currently on a national tour to mark the legendary band’s own 60th Anniversary, will release a fresh, 21st century recording of the 1969 classic “Armstrong”, named for the first human to set foot on the lunar landscape. Penned in that year by late Trio member John Stewart, the tune is at once an ode to the restless human spirit of optimism and discovery and a prescriptive for a wounded world despairing of its very survival. The song will be released alongside a music video, filled with imagery of space exploration as well as scenes of a world in crisis:

“The rivers are getting dirty
The air is getting bad
Sometimes it seems like war and hate
Are the only things we've had
But all the world stopped to watch
On a July afternoon
To watch a man named Armstrong
Walk upon the moon…”

Words that echo back through space as apt now as when they were written a half century ago, by Stewart, a peerless songwriter whose hits also include works for other artists, including such classics as Daydream Believer, Gold, California Bloodlines and numerous others. And in the harmonies rendered by current Trio members Mike Marvin, Tim Gorelangton and Don Marovich, the significance of the moment is all the more poignant in troubled times.

Marvin noted, “We love the juxtaposition of the worlds of science and progress and the more earthbound but still visionary world of folk music and the ideals it promoted of peaceful co-existence.”
