The abandoned settlement CAMPOCHIARO (ELEOUSA) - RHODOS21

Campochiaro was a model village built c. 1935 to host a few hundred 'settlers' from Northern Italy and more specifically from the Val di Fiemme, in the eastern part of Trentino. Italians invited to Rhodes at the behest of the governor, Mario Lago, as part of a larger scheme connected with the massive construction campaign which was taking place all over the island. It also called for the establishment of a few rural communities from all over Italy, these particular colonists' task being the caretaking of local forests. This governor was using an advisory stance and his oculate policies to foster a climate of relative peace and cooperation between the island's two communities. However, the appointment with the far way less pleasant successor (Cesare Maria de Vecchi) was enough to spoil years of hard work.

The war, and then the German occupation, did the rest. Most settlers left between 1940 and 1943; a few remained until 1947 when Rhodes united with Greece, the Italians went back to Italy, and Campochiaro was renamed as Eleousa.

The architecture of the buildings follows the rationalist standards of the period, with a Mediterranean architectural vocabulary. The main building complex consists of three multifunctional buildings
(administration, school, police station, shops, restaurant, doctor's office, apartments) and the church thus enclosing the rectangular square. Those buildings after the end of the Italian occupation functioned as a sanatorium (1947-1970) and then as school and barracks. Today, only one part of building three and the church is in use, and the rest abandoned. All the square's buildings have undergone alterations and degenerations, internally and externally, not all on the same level. Locals still inhabit the houses of the settlement.
